Indestructible
These leashes are the best I've ever found. After buying several retractable leashes that failed after six months with my 10 pound dog, I bought one of these. The pink one was purchased in 2016, the black in 2017. You can see by the grooves near the handle how much my dogs (12 and 14 pounds) have pulled. Both dogs and pulled these out of my hands repeatedly where the leashes have been flung five to ten feet landing on pavement. They never broke apart, and the retraction mechanism has never failed. I would buy this product endlessly. The only reason I have not bought new ones - they also clean up beautifully and have not failed. I want to buy new ones only to refresh the look. But these work perfectly well, so I don't.

So far impressed
This just came today, so this is only my initial impression, but so far I'm very pleased and looking forward to trying it out.I have been through two retractable leashes already. The first one the recoil mechanism broke in less than a month (I have a 17 pound Pomeranian). This was after multiple times of not recoiling and having to pull her back hand over hand. I got a refund.Next, I tried a "tape" retractable. I have had this one for under two weeks, and, well you see I'm writing a review for a third. The leash hook to the dog would not rotate enough so that made the tape rotate and retract twisted. Again, having to pull her back by hand. Also it does a rapid recoil AFTER it has recoiled in. So, it is pulled in, but I guess it's still loose on the spool, so once there is no tension at all it will rapidly coil the leash in the housing, sometimes freaking out my dog (it's loud). Finally, the battery cover came off the top for the not so bright LED light. Oh, and no poop bag holder either. I'm returning that one tomorrow. So, we come to Flexi. The packaging alone has already put the other two to shame. I purchased the Vario model with all the accessories. The weight, heft and construction are great, it feels like an actual product or tool instead of a plastic toy.The multi box is cool, easy to add or remove. It can be used for bags, treats, you could even put money or a house key in it. It opens on both sides and there is a removable rubber stopper on the bottom for a bag opening. The light is my only concern, as it is attached by a Velcro ring. I hope it holds over time dio we shall see.So, so far, impressed, looks and feels sturdy and I Wil be back in a month or so to update my review after we've tried it out.

It's the extra length NEW UPDATE
I like Flexi in general but this has a bit of leash that DOES NOT RETRACT INTO THE UNIT. It has a 17" cloth leash that hangs down, which causes all kinds of problems. It gets caught under the dogs tail, moves the harness around, and gets wrapped around his feet. Plus it drags on the ground when your grabbing it, so you might trip over it. I have to untangle the dog every walk. Might be ok for a very large dog, but medium and small dogs it's going to get tangled in their feet.UPDATE: I believe this leash may be a "training" leash. IOW when retracted the non-retractable part is the proper length when walking with the dog by your side. So if your going for a walk it could teach the dog to walk along side you. Then when the dog wants to explore or go to bathroom just unlock and you have full use of the leash. This would explain why it's designed this way, but not mentioned in the description. Raising review from 1 star to 4. Good product just not what I wanted, but possibly useful for training a dog to walk beside you.

The best reasonably-priced retractable leashes on the market: Get One!
Over the years I have had many retractable leashes. The cheap ones work poorly, break, are heavier than need be, and don't fit your hand properly. I have had two previous Flexi leases and both were excellent. One was a large black one used with Guide Dog (Labrador) puppies we raised. The second was a tiny pink one used with a 22 year old Yorkie/Shihtzu mix. After 6 years it snapped. Turned out our dog was 10 pounds bigger than max weight for that leash. I chose the above leash to correspond with the proper weight of the dog. It's about 33% bigger than previous tiny one but still light and comfortable. The quality of the Flexi products is great. They look good, are well-made, retract smoothly, and lock firmly. They are comfortable to hold. 26' is a nice length. Our little 22 pound Yorkie/Shih-Tzu, poodle mix is very active and we walk 2-5 miles a day. The leash is made in Germany by people who obviously take pride in their workmanship. The plastic used is very nicely molded and really strong and durable. My advice: don't mess around with cheaper leashes. These Flexi leashes will last longer, work better, and give you comfort that you can control your dog. The price isn't that much higher than the junk leashes that don't retract well, weight a ton, and cheap plastic molding break if dropped on pavement. I am so happy I stuck with Flexi.

Wonderful to exercise your dog if you don't have a fenced in yard.
I've used flexi leads for over 25 years. Being handicapped this lead allows my dog 26' to run around and get exercise as I am not able to walk far. It's easy to operate. Be sure to lock the lead while picking up after your dog so they don't run out in the street while your occupied. If this is your first attempt I strongly advise you to thoroughly read the instructions and practice at home in your house or on your property to get used to it and practice how to get your dog to come back closer to you. This is very important otherwise if the lead is totally extended you lack full control and your dog can easily run into the street or wrap themselves around a tree or person in a split second. Be careful to keep the leash short and locked while around other dogs and people to avoid injury with the cord. Otherwise it can easily wrap around you or someone else and injure them with the cord. It can cause abrasions and cuts if your not careful. I would not recommend a child using this.It has been a Great aid for me so my dog gets the exercise he needs. If I'm going to the Vets or be around people at a park ETC, I'll either lock the lead at a short length or use a regular leather leash.
