Q: Can i use this safely on varanda with a roof? my kid wants to have a playing area there for him and his friends. would that be safe? they are older ki

I use mine under a stucco ceiling with about 3 feet of clearance and it is fine. If you roof is non combustionable or has a non combustionable finish like stucco or metal and you keep 3 feet of clearance you should be fine. Keep 4 ‘ min from windows too.

Q: How much clearance is recommended between top of heater and bottom of outdoor deck ceiling?

I'm not sure there is a recommended height in instructions (and I've had mine too long to have instructions any more) but this throws a lot of heat. I'd keep it at least 3 feet away from a wall and at least 4 feet clear of a ceiling.

Q: How hot is this thing on top? I am concerned about melting the soffit on my patio... is this a concern?

Our patio is open air with the exception of the pillars holding the patio cover which is a true roof holding solar panels. I'm not sure I would be comfortable with these in the situation you describe as propane is truly for open air spaces.
