Great quality that you would expect from Weller

These Weller tips are excellent. They have an iron plating that takes solder but resists dissolving into the solder so the tips stay the proper shape for quite a long time. Once you wear through the iron plating, though, and the bare copper is exposed, it rapidly begins to dissolve, and you need a new tip quickly.The whole concept of regulating the tip temperature by switching the iron on and off by use of a slug of metal at the back end of the tip whose curie point is manufactured to be at the desired temperature is extremely clever. The slug of metal loses its magnetic properties at that curie point, and a magnetically actuated switch in the iron's handle switches power off to the heating element. A pretty elegant solution from long ago.

This is an older technology in soldering, using a fixed 700 degree (F) mechanical/magnetic temperature control, but it still heats quickly and performs well and reliably. The Weller design employs plated tips, and any damage to the plating will result in the tip slowly corroding away in use, but this only means one does not use the soldering iron tip as a pry-bar.

Have been using this tip for decades as a standard size tip. It has served me well.

I had a 30+ year old Weller soldering unit that just wasn't heating up well anymore. I was looking around for a replacement for the whole station and happened across this replacement tip. Ordered it, popped it in, and the iron is working like new.

When I lived in the bay area, there was no shortage of places to find items like this. But in Sonora, there's only Radio Shack and they don't carry Weller tips like this. Happy to have found a supplier online, my old one was really getting sad looking.

Works well for my old Weller soldering station. It brought it back to life again after working with an old tip for years.
