Yes – You can use these without a machine. There’s a trick. I’ll show you.
TLDR – You can use these without a machine, and get excellent results, if you dampen the paper.Card Stock yields the best results, imo, but needs help to dry completely flat. Watercolour paper dried flat on its own.I asked the question on a different listing: “Can you use these without a machine?”I received several answers, all telling me that it would not work. This is false. You absolutely can use these little things, and get great results, depending on what you are using it for. I just need it for a backdrop in a shadowbox, so this works well for my needs. What You Need:- Fine Mister (like this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07XF4VQXB )- Paper Towels- Rolling Pin- An Embossing Folder- PaperMethod:- Mist the paper with a fine mist.- I misted both sides, lightly.- Blot the paper on paper towels, so there are no water droplets on the paper.- Insert paper into Embossing Folder- Proceed to Roll with a rolling pin.- Put your weight into it.- You may not want to use a rolling pin with special meaning to you, in case it dents.- Flip the Folder, and Roll some more.- I flipped it back & forth several times- Remove Paper- Lay flat and let 'dry' (it shouldn't be wet wet, just damp)- You may need to use a light drying rack, or screen, to keep the paper flat while drying.- Watercolour paper did not require this, but yields less-deep embossing.Pictured from left to right:Cheap, horribly thin, Printer Paper – Left: Dry, Right: DampenedCard Stock – Left: Dry, Right: Dampened140lb Cold Press Watercolour Paper – Left: Dry, Right: DampenedLast 2 photos are Card Stock, and Watercolour (watercolour paper is slightly yellow, and on the right)To view larger photos, right click > open image in new tab.

Nice embossing folder
This embossing folder is nice, but only for greeting card sized cards. If you are making invitation size, it has to be cut down and doesn't look as good as making for the greeting card size.Great for adding embellishments to add to the look.

Superb 3D emboss effect!!!
This is quickly my favorite embossing brand and the particular style is also my favorite. There is an inside and outside and the 3D effect is superb. I used on both thick and thin paper, and both came out perfectly!! Thought it was bigger, however works great!! Has a clean border also.

Too thick
I need to be a lumberjack to use this. For some reason it doesn't work good in the electric one and is difficult in the arm operated one...both sizzix machines.I do like the design.
