Q: Can I use these with rca cable?

The SILK 4 is equipped with 5-way binding posts to work with a variety of different speaker wire connection methods. But you can't use the RCA cable to connect the speaker, we recommend you to use the speaker-specific connection wires.

Q: Thinking of putting these in a bookshelf. can i plug the rear port? if so, will it still extend down to at least 80 hz for crossover with a subwoofer?

Yes, the speaker will extend down to 80Hz with the rear port plugged. However, if you are going to be applying a crossover with a subwoofer, you can leave the port unplugged since the crossover will reduce the bass output from the port.

The Silk 4 is a smaller speaker but designed and manufactured with higher quality, customized components, with significantly better overall audio quality. Due to its smaller woofer size, it does offer less bass output and inferior sensitivity compared to the BS5. These are limitations in physics and the same will be true when comparing any two speakers of different size that are both reasonably well designed. The tonal response of the Silk 4 is smoother, along with less distortion. One other major benefit of the Silk 4 is the waveguided tweeter that significantly improves the directivity of the speaker, making for very stable and expansive imaging in a typical listening room. Even with just one mono speaker, the Silk 4 projects a larger sphere of sound, as the reflections in a room help render the acoustic sound stage beyond a point source.
